Coach Herm Wilson Passes

Former Shocker Head Coach Herm Wilson passed away Wednesday.

My first year as a sprinter on the WSU Track Team was Herm Wilson’s first year as WSU TF XC Head Coach. The picture shown here is of Coach Wilson and Roy Old Person, a Distance and Cross Country standout for WSU.

Coach Wilson was the leader of the WSU Track & Field and Cross Country program from 1967-83, mentoring numerous All-Americans and conference championships throughout his tenure.  He coached the men’s cross country team to the highest national level success in school history as well as bringing upper level track and field and cross country competitions to the city of Wichita.  In recent years, Coach Wilson would often be found at WSU meets supporting the athletes and coaches as well as sponsoring events financially.  He will be dearly missed by our entire program.  Paul Suellentrop from the Roundhouse wrote a great article after Coach Wilson’s passing summarizing his career and getting quotes from many of his former athletes, please take a few minutes to read it here … https://goshockers.com/news/2019/11/7/the-roundhouse-rh-wilson-coached-dominant-run-of-cross-country-teams.aspx?path=roundhouse

Here are the arrangements for Coach Herm Wilson:

– Visitation from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 13.
– Memorial Service at 10 a.m. on Nov. 14.
– Both events will be at Lakeview Funeral Home (12100 E 13th St. N, Wichita, KS, 67206)*
